Common use
Amiodarone is an antiarrhythmic medication used to treat and prevent serious, potentially life-threatening heart rhythm disorders such as ventricular tachycardia and ventricular fibrillation. It works by stabilizing the heart's electrical activity and helping maintain a regular heartbeat. Amiodarone is usually prescribed when other medications have failed or are not suitable. It may be used long-term under close medical supervision.
Dosage and direction
Amiodarone can be taken orally as tablets or administered intravenously in a hospital setting for acute arrhythmias. The dosage is typically high at the beginning (loading dose) and then gradually reduced to a maintenance dose. Your doctor will tailor the dose based on your condition, response to treatment, and lab results. Always take it exactly as prescribed and never stop suddenly without medical advice.
Precautions
Before starting amiodarone, inform your doctor if you have lung disease, liver problems, thyroid disorders, or vision issues. The medication can affect multiple organs, so regular monitoring of liver, lung, thyroid, and eye function is essential. Avoid grapefruit juice while taking amiodarone, as it may increase the drug's concentration in your body. Protect your skin from sunlight, as amiodarone can cause sensitivity to UV rays.
Contraindications
Amiodarone is contraindicated in individuals with severe sinus node dysfunction, bradycardia (slow heart rate), or second- or third-degree AV block without a pacemaker. It should not be used in people with known hypersensitivity to iodine or amiodarone. Patients with cardiogenic shock should also avoid this drug. Use during pregnancy is not recommended unless absolutely necessary.
Possible side effect
Common side effects include nausea, fatigue, tremors, and changes in taste. Long-term use can lead to serious complications such as lung toxicity, liver dysfunction, thyroid imbalance, and vision problems. Rare but severe effects include life-threatening arrhythmias or skin discoloration (blue-gray tint). Report any breathing difficulty, yellowing of the skin or eyes, or vision changes to your doctor immediately.
Drug interaction
Amiodarone has numerous drug interactions, particularly with medications that affect heart rhythm, blood thinning (e.g., warfarin), or blood pressure. It can also interact with digoxin, statins, certain antibiotics, and antidepressants. Always inform your healthcare provider of all medications and supplements you are using. Some interactions may require dose adjustments or close monitoring.
Missed dose
If you miss a dose, take it as soon as you remember, unless it’s almost time for your next dose. Do not take two doses at once to make up for a missed one. Missing doses may reduce the drug's effectiveness in controlling arrhythmias. Try to take your medication at the same time each day.
Overdose
An overdose of amiodarone may cause serious heart problems, such as very slow heartbeat, fainting, or even cardiac arrest. If you suspect an overdose, seek emergency medical attention right away. Treatment involves monitoring and supportive care in a hospital. Never take more than the prescribed dose.
Storage
Store amiodarone at room temperature, away from heat, light, and moisture. Keep it in its original container and out of reach of children. Do not use the medication after the expiration date. Ask your pharmacist how to dispose of unused medicine properly.
